Fundamentals of Artificial Hybridization Techniques in Plant Breeding

Abstract

Hybrid genotypes have some advantages such as uniformity and earlier maturity, higher yield, enhanced processing characteristics, increased disease and insect resistance and extended shelf and storage life. Using artificial hybridization techniques is one of the most important applications for having these advantages in plant breeding. For succession of breeder in artificial hybridization, the breeder should know some important subjects like reproductive structure and development, environmental condition for flowering and techniques for artificial hybridization. Even though there is specific variation among species for artificial hybridization, general techniques for artificial hybridization in plant breeding are evaluated in this study.
